SALEM COUNTY VETERANS' CEMETERY EXPANSION DEDICATED

PILESGROVE -- Buildings and Grounds Freeholder Chairman Mike Facemyer has set Veterans' Day, November 11th, to publicly consecrate land for the expansion of the Salem County Veterans' Cemetery. The ceremony will take place at 3:00 P.M. at the site, which can be reached via Cemetery Road off State Highway Route 45 on the Mannington-Pilesgrove Townships' border.

Freeholder Facemyer said, "This expansion of the cemetery was in response to the recommendation by the Salem County War Veterans Memorial Park and Cemetery task force. This expansion represents a 55% increase in cemetery space that should accommodate veterans' needs for the next 30 years. Through the opening of this additional acreage, the Freeholders express their deep respect and support for our veterans."

Freeholder Director Sparks said, "The Freeholder Board was pleased to honor this request from the veterans' community for expansion of the cemetery. The resulting Freeholder resolution sums up the Board's intention that the, '& land &would be appropriate and most desirable&' "

The present cemetery accommodates 2,530 plots, comprised of 2,228 filled graves, 563 reserved graves and 302 available plots. There are approximately 70 burials annually.

American flags at survey points will outline the perimeter of the expansion at the ceremony.
