Upper Pittsgrove Township Municipal Building Cannon
Napoleon captured this 800-pound cannon, marked with an Italian inscription of 1800. It was in the custody of the French army during the campaign in Spain, then was captured by the British and sent to America with Wellington’s veterans in 1812. The American army captured it at Plattsburg, NY. Later it was purchased by Major Judah Foster of Salem County for use in training at Pole Tavern. In 1889, it was moved to the New Jersey State Arsenal in Trenton and later returned to Pole Tavern in 1913. When driving around Pole Tavern circle on Route 40, look for the cannon on display in its new home.
